The five winners that were screened at an ongoing Film Festival which formed part of the National Student Conference in September , hosted in Port Elizabeth was attended by 750 students. A Premiere was organized and hosted by the University of the Free State for the Free State entry called 'Umbrellaman 'and was well attended by architects, students and academics in middle October. The winning films will be screened at the Prague Architectural Biennale end of October, and in November at the international SNIFT Short Film Festival in Berne, Switzerland. Films will be screened on an ongoing basis at Film Festivals nationally through the Nu Metro and Ster Kinekor platforms, and on SABC 2. There will be a nationwide Architects Afrika Film Festival in 2012 where all past C&CI Short Films will form the core of a standalone short film programme, which will culminate in screenings at the architectureZA 2012 Biennale in Cape Town in September 2012.
The competition will continue in 2012, and entries will be called for to investigate architectural issues and the use of concrete around the theme of 'On the Fringe' early in 2012.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
It was decided to extend the Sustainable Design Competition to all levels of graduation exit- e.g. Arch Dip; B.Tech; Hons & Masters as an opportunity for students to enter major projects dealing with issues of sustainability! This decision was made in response to several requests received from architectural institutions. Obviously projects will be judged according to the year of expertise to allow all an equally chance.
Students who wish to enter this important competition need to submit their contact details, the title of their intended project and a very brief synopsis of the project. In addition we would require an endorsement from the relevant design lecturer or HOD of the institution.
Submissions for entries will close end of January 2012, where after work will be collected to allow a national traveling exhibition culminating in judging and an awards event at the AZA Biennale in September 2012, Cape Town.
