Bruce Raath graduated from the University of Natal with a BSc degree in Civil Engineering and joined the engineering division of the South AfricanTransport Services in 1970.
In 1979 he joined the consulting practice DL Webb and Associates where he became an associate in 1983. In 1984 he joined the lecturing staff of the ML Sultan Technikon where he became senior lecturer in structural design and theory of structures.
He first joined the Cement and Concrete Institute in 1989 as the Regional Manager for KwaZulu-Natal but formed his own company called Contest in 1997. As a partner in Contest he was involved in consulting and testing in the field of concrete and started a training division. He rejoined the C&CI in 2006 as the Education and Training manager.
