South African Focus

One of the key objectives of the Cement & Concrete Institute (C&CI) is the promotion of concrete roads in South Africa. Initial focus will be the rehabilitation of existing roads and construction of new low-volume roads which tend to be labour-intensive in nature.

Developments

• A database on South African concrete roads is being developed and will be accessible through the Internet at: www.cncipave.org.za 


• The revised mechanistic design programme for concrete pavements has been launched and is available on the Internet at: www.cncipave.org.za

Current and recent projects

Rehabilitation of existing roads

• N3 - concrete inlay to shoulders, slow and middle lanes at Town Hill
• M7 - further concrete inlays to the slow lane on both north and southbound carriageways
• Edwin Swales Drive - concrete overlay to existing concrete pavement

• Concrete surfacing of gravel road in steep grade areas in Tranksei
• Concrete access road to police training facility in Bisho
• Low volume concrete township roads near Gateway, Umhlanga
