NQF LEVELS
Qualification levels and unit standards have been set by the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as follows:

Level Qualification Job title Academic level
ABET LEVELS 1 to 4   Informal and part-time workers Adult Basic Education and Training give entry to NQF level 1

NQF LEVEL 1 National certificate in construction General worker   General Education and Training Certificate

NQF LEVEL 2 National certificate in construction Team leader/ skilled worker School grade 10 Further Education and Training Certificate

NQF LEVEL 3 National certificate in construction: subject listed Artisan/ chargehand for all building trades Passed apprenticeship (now renamed learnership) Further Education and Training Certificate

NQF LEVEL 4 National certificate in the supervision of construction processes Foreman/ Supervisor: single site or portion of large site School grade 12 Further Education and Training Certificate

NQF LEVEL 5 National diploma in the management of civil engineering construction processes Site engineer/ multi-site supervisor/ first line manager Technikon diploma Diploma

NQF LEVEL 6 National first degree Construction manager 3-year degree Degree (3-year)

NQF LEVEL 7 Professional degree Project manager 4-year degree/ honours degree Degree (4-year)

NQF LEVEL 8 Post-graduate degree Senior manager Masters/ doctoral degree Post-graduate.

Please note that the equivalence shown in the table above is not exact. There is a problem in matching the previous construction industry worker levels to the NQF levels; there is also a problem in matching school grades to construction qualification levels. For example: NQF level 4 is accepted to be at school grade 12 or matric level, and yet a construction supervisor or foreman is at the same level. Knowledge and responsibility clearly do not line up.
